A new online Youth News Desk is giving young people an opportunity to hone their journalistic skills and raise environmental awareness to speed up local and global change.

Fittingly the Desk was launched earlier this Summer on World Environment Day to celebrate the work of the young winners of the United Nations Environment Programme Global 500 Awards. ‘Many people of all ages everywhere around the world are working in unique ways to protect the environment and to solve environmental problems ñ each effort is a story worth telling,’ say the developers of the News Desk.

News reports written by people up to the age of nineteen will be published and distributed worldwide by the Environment News Service on two websites. The Environment News Service and the related Horizon Solutions site want the world to read those stories as written by young writers. In recognition of their work towards the protection of the environment, current and previous Global 500 Youth Laureates are especially invited to contribute reports but the invitation to submit copy extends to young people in all countries of the world. It is a unique opportunity for young people to develop interviewing, researching, writing, editing and photographic skills.

All submissions will be reviewed by a seven member international panel and at least one article each month will be selected for publication. The writers of all published reports will receive a byline and be paid a fee for their work.
