Feeling gloomy about global warming? The Gaia Energy Centre is the place***image1:right*** for you! With the aim of making the consumption of energy sustainable, the centre is a power-house of inspiration and information on all aspects of renewable energy: from water, wind and solar power to geothermal heat and biomass crops.

The centre has been named after Professor James Lovelock’s Gaia theory and it provides insight into the possible future effects of global warming. ‘From the edge of space to one hundred miles below the surface, the Earth has been made from the breath, the blood and bones of all life that went before us. We do not simply adapt to the Earth, we are changing it all the time,’ said the professor. There may well be a price to pay for what we do now and the Gaia Centre demonstrates why renewable energy is so important to us all.

The Centre is set low among wind turbines of the first commercial wind farm at Delabole in Cornwall. The building itself demonstrates affordable sustainability, with high levels of insulation, electricity supplied by the farm’s wind turbines, solar panels, use of grey water and other renewable systems.

Peter Edwards, Trust Director and wind farm owner said, ‘The Centre is going to get better all the time. Nothing is written down and this makes it easy to add to the exhibition and to change it as the technology develops.’ The Centre also houses a resource centre with library and Internet access, a lecture theatre, cafÈ and shop.
