After three years of campaigning across the world, working only with volunteers and individual donations, 32 year old British film-maker Jeremy Gilley has obtained official recognition for Peace One Day from the United Nations.

A resolution based entirely on Gilley’s idea was proposed by the British and Costa Rican Governments and unanimously ad-opted by the General Assembly of the United Nations and announced on September 11. With the official announcement, Secretary General Kofi Annan declared, ‘You have proved that individuals can make a difference and if each of us does our bit collectively we will make a major contribution.’

The Global Cease-fire Day is to be marked on the twenty first of September each year starting in 2002 and where truces are observed, medical and development agencies can provide vital services to civilian victims in safety. The campaign to create global awareness of the day is now underway. Peace One Day is now working with governments, UN agencies, NGOs, Nobel Peace Laureates, religious organisations, universities, schools and individuals throughout the world and particularly children to fulfil its objectives.
