It has cross-party support in Parliament and the backing of a powerful coalition of organisations like The Soil Association, Friends of the Earth, Shelter and UNISON. The Bill is the start of the New Economics Foundation’s Campaign for Local Sustainability and NEF is asking for public support. Introducing the Bill, Sue Doughty, Liberal MP for Guildford said: “Recently, lots of organisations have been running campaigns on the importance of localism’. It’s an important concept for anyone who believes that local people should be able to take more control over their destinies.” New Economics Foundation Policy Director, Andrew Simms, says, “This is a new, coherent response to seemingly untouchable global economic forces that put profits for a small and distant minority before the needs of people, communities and the environment.“
