Their owner, Adrian Lawton of the Cotswold Experience, says: ‘Biodiesel is sold more widely in the USA and in Europe but is still hard to get hold of in the UK. Properly processed biodiesel can go straight into a diesel engine without any need to modify the engine.
‘It is usually made from waste oils although dedicated fuel crops are also an option. Engine specialists are enthusiastic about its superior properties which are hardly matched by mineral fuels.‘
Biodiesel has the great advantage of being carbon neutral, which means that it does not add any extra carbon to the atmosphere.
Carbon is absorbed by the growing plant, through photosynthesis, and when the plant decomposes or is burnt e.g. as biodiesel, it releases the same amount of carbon back into the atmosphere.
Optimistic forecasts suggest that biodiesel could replace at least half the road fuel consumption of the UK. The production would rejuvenate farming, create jobs and become a strategic strength as our reliance on foreign imports and huge multi-nationals would become less.
The Cotswold Experience uses biodiesel in all it’s vehicles and can supply biodiesel to other pioneers. Their office electricity is provided by Unite a renewable energy company.
