Dr.Vandana Shiva, Director of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, India explained that the Earth Democracy Movement gets its inspiration from the timeless Indian concept of Earth Family which recognises that humans are part of the web of life and not above and apart from it.

The Earth Democracy Move-ment has grown organically and simultaneously in different parts of the world, she said, in re-sponse to a globalisation which is creating new rules that give advantage to some humans, those with capital, above other humans and other species.

There is increasing energy to find a new direction. The era of social movements uniting around common values and concerns is already happening. It has been building over the last few years in the form of common campaigns, global days of action, coalitions of groups co-operating on common issues and gather-ings like the World Social Forum and the Peoples UN Assembly. At the heart of the Peoples- Earth-Summit lie events in Soweto including the Mountain of Hope and the Children’s Earth Summit, co-ordinated by Mandla Mentoor who was in London for the launch of the UK Peoples- Earth-Summit before attending the Restore the Earth Conference in Scotland.

Meanwhile, in New York, Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General said he sees the World Summit on Sustainable Development, starting August 26th, as a means to rehabilitate the Earth, echoing the conference call for restoring the world’s degraded ecosystems to be the essential task for humanity in the 21st century. The Peoples Earth Summit plans to inspire action under twelve broad themes. This holistic approach, con-necting ecological and social justice and respecting diversity across the world, provides a niche for all individuals and groups which wish to take part in creating a powerful voice for a sustainable planet. “The Peoples Earth Summit is about celebrating together the potential we have, each of us in our daily lives”, says Vandana Shiva. “We are in a different moment of history and in this new moment of history people have to be at the core of creating a new democracy, an Earth Democracy.
