Those participating will be invited to select the design of rickshaw that best suits their personal requirements, and at the end of the journey, it will be donated as a gift to the MMCF bearing the name of the kind donor. This will enable the Foundation to use the rickshaws themselves, and to develop further technology employing vehicles that do not use fossil fuels, emit carbon dioxide and unburned hydrocarbons ñ the major causes of global warming.
The Royal Rajasthan Solar Rally is the first of a series of rallies in Rajasthan taking place between Sunday 30th March and Saturday 12th April 2003. Th journey which will be made partly by solar rickshaw, partly by jeep, will start south of Delhi at the fort Palace of Neemrana and pass through desert dunes and forested hills visiting Jaipur, Bikaner and Gajmer, Jaisalamer, Jodhpur and Kumbhalgarh, before finishing in Udaipur, The City of Lakes. The objectives of the Rally are to test different types of solar vehicles and to highlight the fact that due to accelerating climate change, global warming is creating drought and floods round the world; and that the demand for oil is rising at a faster rate than supply with a predicted shortage by 2009.
