In May this year the European Parliament Environment Committee voted for stronger laws governing GM labelling and traceability.

Itpaves the way for better consumer choice and action to protect organicand non-GM farmers from genetic contamination. The Committee concludedthat if GMOs are to be grown on a commercial scale, additionallegislation is needed to make sure that non-GM farmers are protectedand that GM-free food will be available. Most European consumers chooseGM-free food. ‘This is a clear political signal that the EuropeanCommission cannot ignore,’ said Friends of the Earth Campaigner, GeertRitsema. ‘Voluntary guidelines will not secure GM-free food.‘
