This was an event which brought together 30 young leaders, aged 15–30, from 20 nations, who are all involved with organisations and movements working for social justice, peace, freedom, dignity and environmental sanity.
The World Youth Jam is a project of Youth for Environmental Sanity (YES!) ñ a youth leadership organisation based in the US which embraces Gandhi’s belief: “We must be the change we seek in the world”
Activities at the Jam included sharing circles, dance and live music, organised networking, games, yoga, workshops, an outdoor adventure and guest presentations from world renowned social change leaders. This is the first time the forum has been held outside America so everyone had the chance to explore the beauty of the ashram where they were staying in Rishikesh, Uttaranchal, India.
One core idea of the Jam was to develop activists on three different levels; the internal (growing spiritually and personally); the interpersonal (seeking to bring love, integrity and honesty into their relationships) and the societal (building a world of justice, dignity, peace and balance).
“The Jam was a transforming and almost miraculous experience for me, my body, and my spirit,” said Dhruv Malhotra, aged 16 years, Youth Action Network, India. “It was a reaffirmation of my belief in myself and my work.” “The Jams are like model class-rooms for activists. Nothing beats meeting 30 young people who are not only holding the keys to global change but who are absolute angels,” said Kimmie Weeks, aged 20 years, United Nations Young Ambassador Corps, Liberia. “It’s like seeing a new dawn for young activists.“
