It aims to draw attention to our responsibilities as guardians of future generations and life on earth.
“With a global membership representing the wise, the pioneers, the heroes and young leaders, the proposed World Future Council will provide an ongoing forum for debate on the necessary transformation of our societies,” says founder of the renowned Right Livelihood Foundation and former MEP, Jakob von Uexkull. “It will serve as a forum to focus global attention on priorities for action and will debate the choices facing us from a perspective of expanded responsibility. Necessary legislative changes will be pressed for to prevent future social injustice and environmental degradation. We need to build on tried and tested alternative ways to live in harmony with each other and nature.”
The Initiative for a World Future Council builds on the Earth Emergency Call for Action. It seeks to link up civil society initiatives around the world to promote the creation of local, regional and national Future Councils. “Today there is an urgent need for a council that expresses our values as citizens of the world, rather than just global consumers,” says Jakob von Uexkull. It would seek and offer counsel on the future of the planet, guiding us on the most challenging journey we have ever faced. “Short-term commercial thinking now has veto power over global decision making. As a result much of the work spent on developing solutions never gets implemented, despite the growing clamour for a change of course. At a time when the world craves visionary leadership, our leaders have made themselves prisoners of an economic fundamentalism which undermines the values and institutions of our societies. As a result, they face cynicism, disinterest and violent opposition.
“The widening gap between our deeper values and current policies now threatens the legitimacy of our democratic system which offers only superficial alternatives. The World Future Council initiative aims to provide the momentum to change that.“
