Umoja ñ The Spirit of Togetherness is a high energy musical that was born in the township of Soweto in an attempt to lead young talent off the streets and out of crime. The result is a fantastic musical experience with a cast of 36 of South Africa’s brightest and most versatile young performers, singers, drummers and marimba players.

The show is a genuine celebration of the unique and rich music and dance heritage of South Africa. Audiences have been spellbound by the variety of performance styles.

Umoja is the inspiration of Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni who saw a need to develop the natural artistic abilities and energy of South Africa’s young people. Children from disadvantaged communities and town- ships often had enormous creative potential and talent but no access to any kind of training or work and often only minimal education. They decided to set up a performing arts school for young people from disadvantaged communities. “Many of the performers are disadvantaged street kids who have had little or no formal training.

They have raw, natural talent and bound-less energy, which makes the show what it is ñ a real story about real people,” said Joe Theron, the producer. “It’s a story of Africa, its music and the people. It’s a show that makes you feel good ñ something we all need today.”
