Yard signs and bumper stickers are cropping up all over the area calling for peace, universal health care and economic justice. One of the most popular slogans is Read Between the Pipelines. The Bush Must Go campaign began at the Ithaca Peace Summit promising a sustained campaign of political mobilisation to defeat Bush in 2004 and build a large, active, enduring community movement devoted to peace, justice, social equality and grassroots democratic participation’.

Howard Engelskirchen explained that opposition to Bush is a good opportunity to educate and mobilise people, and make sure they register to vote. He does not see the campaign as partisan or essentially negative. ‘Saying no to the footprint of empire sounds pretty positive to me,’ he says.

The group see defeating George Bush as critical to making a positive vision for the world come true so they plan to continue their efforts well after November. They say: ‘Issues of war, the environment and racism don’t go away with an election.‘
