A brand new project launched by the Alternative Technology Centre (ATC), in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, is helping whole school communities learn about sustainability and environmental issues.

After a growing number of requests from schools wanting information on sustainable development and citizenship the ATC created SUSchool. It offers information and advice to schools that want to put their words into action and work with their pupils in making their school as sustainable a possible. Projects are varied, ranging from recycling waste paper to sourcing local food for the school canteen. Issues are looked at holistically and they encourage all members of the school and local community to get involved.

The SUSchool programme is providing schools with access to a growing library of resources on sustainability, linked to the National Curriculum, as well as opportunities including possible visits and funding to help schools put their plans into practice. Further elements of the project include a playground design service, workshops and interactive demonstration items.

ATC has so far worked with over ten schools in Calderdale in the last year and six in Greater Manchester, developing strong levels of support from both teachers and their schools. SUSchool is part of a growing network of active groups and communities making sustainability a reality for the new generation.
