An extraordinary, cairn-shaped building is nearing completion in Sligo in Ireland. The Gyreum is aligned to the dawns and dusks of both summer and winter solstices when beams of light enter the middle of the central hall.

The Gyreum is 100 feet in diameter and gives 360-degree views of Sligo’s famous mountains. Documentary film maker, Colum Stapleton, purchased the one-hectare property three years ago, in the area, which is designated as a high priority for environmentally sensitive development or eco-tourism.

There will be a specialist hostel, retreat centre and rehearsal space, as well as an office studio for Colum’s documentary and editing business. The Gyreum will hold speciality weekends and retreats. The first will be in June for the summer solstice, with tours around local megalithic sites. Built with the help of a team of local enthusiasts, the unusual wood-framed structure has a living roof, geothermal heating and solar and wind energy systems. Triodos Bank has provided a small loan towards the refurbishment.
According to Colum, it lies at the junction of three ancient ley lines. It is also in the midst of an area for good cycling, hiking and horse riding.

With only the final touches now being added to a site steeped in ancient heritage, it seems The Gyreum will soon cast some of its own magic on the surrounding area.
