The course will include video clips of the film, Gandhi, directed by Lord Attenborough, and will be called The Legacy of Gandhi and Global Citizenship. After an initial introduction, there will be five modules on key issues: these being Identity, Equality and Community, Non Violent Protest, Environmental Issues and Exploring Spirituality.
Founded by Susan Denton-Brown, a religious education teacher in Sussex, as a means of bringing the teachings of Gandhi into mainstream education, The Foundation believes that teaching young people how to manage and thus resolve conflicts in their own lives is crucial to a sense of moral and social responsibility. Famous figures will also be looked at, such as Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi and Lech Walesa, as well as organisations in the UK and abroad who practise negotiation and conciliation.
The pack aspires to meet all the citizenship requirements of the National Curriculum. The introduction of non violent conflict resolution in schools could certainly be a step closer to a better world.
