The five-day NetTogether’ in September will in corporate a pioneering Design School and Convergence21. It is an opportunity to explore the potential of permaculture, network with others and designs for the future. The convergence will take place at an eco-camping site in Oxfordshire. Guest speakers will include Satish Kumar and Caroline Lucas MEP and there will be workshops and seminars, a sauna, organic food, and childcare.
Conceived by Australian ecologists Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the 70s, permaculture is a design concept that uses patterns and principles learned from nature to create sustainable human settlements. It has become a worldwide movement of activists working across disciplines as diverse as agriculture, community development, urban planning and disaster relief.
Permaculture arrived in Britain in the early 1980s. There are now over 3,000 graduates’ of the design course and a strong grassroots network has emerged, with projects from Cornwall to the Highlands of Scotland, in both rural and urban environments. The Permaculture Association acts as a central node within this network, and boasts an enormously comprehensive website. The Independent Permaculture Magazine reaches around 11,000 people and a growing range of publications explore the accumulated knowledge and experience of British permaculturalists.
The UK movement has become one of the most effective and inspiring in the world, empowering thousands of individuals to take positive action in their lives. Many innovative ideas are now being accepted by the mainstream as permaculture finally comes of age.
