A Welsh, non-profit charity, ‘toogoodtowaste’, are committed to helping people access quality, affordable, recycled furniture, while reducing landfill and promoting the idea of sustainable living. The organisation helps thousands of people on low income and state benefits to furnish their homes by redistributing household items donated by the community. They also provide local volunteer and training opportunities, to help people in the area build confidence and gain vital work skills.
In 1993 Lynda Davies worked for Barnardo’s Charity in the Welsh valleys of Rhondda Cynon Taf, one of the most deprived counties in Wales. She saw first-hand the effects of poverty on local people, and as an answer to Barnardo’s inability to accept furniture, she came up with the idea of a local furniture recycling scheme. Valleys Furniture Recycling Ltd ’ now known as ‘toogoodtowaste’ ’ started in 1995 and, over the years, established itself as a vital service to the community.
Now into their 12th year, ‘toogoodtowaste’ are open to all, offering a two-tiered pricing system that provides a 30 per cent discount to customers on income-based benefits plus free delivery. They also offer a free BBC Children in Need sponsored ‘sorted’ package for 16–18 year olds, that helps local youngsters set-up a new home. As a predominantly volunteer-run initiative, ‘toogoodtowaste’ have been instrumental in helping the community combine the reduction of its waste for landfill, while alleviating the effects of poverty and boosting community regeneration.
‘Toogoodtowaste’ are currently in the process of planning an exciting schedule of roadshows. Check on their website for updated information on dates and venues coming soon. If you would like to work with them orhave resources to offer, please get in touch.
