Space Energy holds the key to an inexhaustible, non-polluting power supply. The idea is to use satellites in Earth’s orbit or systems on the moon’s surface, to collect the sun’s energy and turn it into usable electricity. This can then be beamed back down to receiving antennas on Earth, located either on land or offshore. David Saunders discusses some of the debates surrounding the Space Energy concept.
A New Science and Technology
‘Space Energy’ generators make electricity at a fraction of the cost of current systems. It is clean, unlimited, carbon neutral, and fuel-free ’ needs no fossil or sustainable fuels. The potential of this new science and technology is that: by buying clean, cheap energy for our homes, transport, telephones and computers, we will use less fossil fuels, dramatically reduce carbon emissions, lower pollution levels and normalise the climate faster than may be possible by any other means.
The Stern Report and Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth raised awareness of Climate Change. The European Union is adopting a common energy policy and setting aggressive targets, of 20 per cent reduction in emissions and 10 per cent more renewables used by 2020. That may not be good enough: ‘Carbon dioxide is accumulating in the atmosphere much faster than scientists expected, raising fears that humankind may have less time to tackle climate change than we previously thought.’ The Guardian 19.1.2007
In a recent editorial in ‘The Ecologist’, Zac Goldsmith cheerily reminds us that 100 years ago, the Victorian eco-disaster of horse manure in our cities was solved by the horseless carriage. He asks if similarly, something new may come to save us. Can the fuel-less horseless carriage save us now?
On 18th Aug 2006, Dublin-based Steorn placed an advertisement in The Economist claiming to have a technology that produces free, clean and constant energy ’ ‘Imagine a world with an infinite supply of pure energy. Never having to recharge your phone. Never having to refuel your car.’ It cast a gauntlet: ‘We are issuing a challenge to the science community: test our technology and report your findings to the world.’
Steorn say their technology generates one half watt per cc ’ from a mobile phone battery up to a one Megawatt generator set. They’ll charge a ‘fair’ price to replace your computer battery, about the cost of a current battery. They’ll make their money out of the west and give the technology free to developing countries, and open it up to developers under an open license at nominal fees ’ they say: ‘There can be no Wintel cartel in the ‘new energy’ business, the technology is too profound.’ That’s pretty altrusitic.
How to explain this new energy to the public if, as Steorn declare, it seems to contravene Conser-vation of Energy? What if the science jury says: ‘This appears to work, but we don’t know how?’ That’s a real challenge to the science world, and it is deliberate provocation by Steorn, who are upset by scientists who say their kit can’t work, and institutions who wouldn’t sign their name to their evaluations.
Evans the Energy
Serendipitously, Maverick Welsh chemical physicist, Myron Evans, has completed Einstein’s work, uniting general relativity and quantum mechanics. The ECE Theory ’ Einstein-Cartan-Evans ’ adds torsion to Einstein’s curved space-time, making over 30 verified predictions ’ just as light bends in curved space, its polarization rotates in the torsion. As Einstein said, we get gravity from the curvature of space; and Myron says we get electromagnetic energy from the torsion. Myron’s theory explains Steorn’s technology; Steorn’s ‘Space Energy’ generators vindicate Myron’s theory. ECE Theory shows why some devices don’t work but it can help improve devices by computer modelling. ECE Theory sacrifices many of physics’ holiest cows: quarks, superstrings, dark matter, singularities, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and more.
Just as the new physics isn’t coming from the physics establishment, the new energy devices aren’t coming from the energy companies. But Steorn have started the gold rush, and companies like ET3M (Mexico), Gamma Manager (Budapest), Magnetic Power (USA), Perendev (Munich), and SuperVision (UK) all claim to have working devices. We’ll see!
Machiavelli said: ‘There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things.’ But Ghandi gives encouragement: ‘First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.’ The evidence suggests we are on the brink of a new science and technology just as we need it, and it’s hard to think of a single breakthrough that can solve so many problems and usher in a more evolved civilisation.
