The Mayor’s Climate Change Action Plan details how this can be done with the help of individuals, companies and the government all playing their part.

Tony Juniper, from Friends of the Earth, said: ‘Hats off to Ken Livingstone for continuing to show political leadership on tackling the issue of climate change! The Government must now follow the Mayor’s lead and ensure that its forth-coming Climate Change Bill will require cuts in carbon dioxide emissions of at least three per cent every year.’

Meanwhile, a host of celebrities, such as Orlando Bloom, Leonardo di Caprio and the Scissor Sisters are all supporting the new climate change charity, Global Cool, which was recently launched in London, Los Angeles and in Fuji, Japan.

‘By getting as many people as possible to do their bit, Global Cool will actually help slow down global warming,’ says founder, Dan Morrell, who hopes to get a billion people committed to personal action over the next 10 years. ‘If we all leave everything up to everyone else, nothing happens but if we each do a bit, we can all do a lot.’

The charity also plans to buy carbon credits and take them out of circulation thus putting up the price and, they hope, reducing the demand.

‘The Global Cool movement coincides with a massive tipping point,’ said the charity’s Richard Kilgarriff. Or as singer KT Tunstall said: ‘It’s becoming really quite uncool not to be involved.’
