The Oval House’s youth arts programme aims to give young people from all across south London a chance to explore their creativity, by giving them basic skills in dance, music and drama.

Working with professional artists they take the ideas and emotions of the young people and give them an opportunity to express themselves in performance. It’s all about what the young people bring with them and how they want to express how they feel.
How does it work?

They run afternoon workshops in dance, music and drama from Monday to Saturday, workshops run for 2hrs and are tutored by professional actors, directors, choreographers and musicians. They work on a ten-week cycle to coincide with the school term. Each class focuses on building up the skills of the young people and then creating a small performance which is shared with their family and friends at the end of each term. They have now established the Oval House Street Dance Company and Oval House Youth Theatre as a direct response to request from some of the young people.

The Dance Company works with a choreographer to create a repertoire of dance pieces that they perform at showcases and festivals all around London. The Youth Theatre works on one major play a year; it’s the next step in the development of young actors, to give them professional experience in a supportive environment.
