The Soil Association’s Food for Life Partnership, FFLP, aims to revolutionise school meals, connect young people with the source of their food and inspire families to eat a healthier diet.
At the heart of the project is the FFLP Cooking Bus. More an articulated lorry than a bus, this is a huge mobile classroom that travels around the country for 39 weeks of the school year, visiting a different school each week.
Staffed by qualified teachers, the bus provides a great resource for children and teachers, as well as the wider community — evening classes are run for adults — with sessions ranging from food preparation to nutrition, food safety and hygiene but above all, people are taught how to cook.
“The Cooking Bus is such an inspiring resource,” says Emma Noble, FFLP’s director. “A week at the venue leaves behind expertise, enthusiasm and skills and makes a massive boost to the local communities food culture.”
