It includes articles, stories, reviews, artwork and photographs, as well as audio and video work ñ a platform where young people from across the whole county can express their views and opinions.
Youth Times, of which InSITE is a part, was first launched by The Rural Media Company in 2003. It provides working opportunities for those aged between 13 and 19, who are living in the area. Over 350 young people participate each year.
Working directly on the site enables the teenagers to explore local, national and global issues, take part in debate, influence decision-making and have a voice on subjects that affect them. With the support of media professionals, they can participate in journalism workshops or media training sessions and learn the necessary skills to develop careers in the media and creative industries. They are also able to develop their own specific areas of interest, whether it be designing, reporting, photography or web skills.
The scheme is delivered through outreach media workshops all over the county in youth clubs, youth groups and schools. The workshops train the young people to develop their ideas into stories and explore issues that matter to them, with a view to publication.
Testimony to the site is that it is not just viewed by teenagers but also by parents, teachers or politicians ñ anyone wanting to get a greater understanding of issues facing the youth of today. In 2007, the site was the proud recipient of the UK Office for Children and Youth Positive Image Award’.
