The area covers 60 acres of flooded chalk quarry and surrounding land.
The Reserve is owned and run by Doug Hilton and his family. ‘We are trying to create a time capsule, that’ll run into the future, making this small part of Kent a better place for wildlife and for people,’ explains Doug.
Within close proximity to London, the industrial landscape is not far away ñ a reminder of how vitally important nature reserves like Buckland are. The project also has a strong emphasis on education and saw its first classroom completed in April. ‘We want to run a multitude of courses, talks and lectures all year round that offer something for everyone and suit all age groups and abilities ñ but the emphasis is on having fun too!’ Doug adds. ‘It’s vital that knowledge about the natural environment is passed down to future generations. People need to know how few truly wild’ sites there are left in Britain, how incredibly important to wildlife they are and what needs to be done to ensure their protection.’
