The Global Cool bus has been visiting festivals throughout the summer, such as Download, T In The Park and V. With audience travel now accounting for two-thirds of a festival’s carbon footprint, Global Cool have been running a ‘Do it in Public’ campaign, which promotes the benefits of using public transport.
By handing out travel deals and give-aways to festival fans, the bus team have been sharing information on how to get the very best out of the nation’s train, bus and tube network.
Many people would like to live a much greener life but are not sure what to do. Global Cool is a climate change charity to get them inspired. They want people ‘to feel good about doing good’ and believe that saving the planet is not just for the ones who think of themselves as green. Offering practical advice on the things that everyone can do to make a positive difference, they are showing it is possible to lead a fun and exciting life, while doing one’s bit for the environment.
As well as handing out information at festivals, Global Cool have created the ‘Do it in Public’ door-to-door journey planner on their website, to help people find a better way of getting about locally. All they have to do is type in where they are setting off from and where they are heading to. The software will tell them numerous ways they can make the same journey. Travellers will also discover how much carbon they can save in the process.
Through exhaustive research, Global Cool have not been able to find any-where in the UK that requires taking a plane or driving a car to get to. They are advocating that even many parts of Europe are now easier to access by train. For journeys close to home, they suggest taking a bus instead, revealing that a full double-decker uses four times less energy per passenger than the same trip takes in a full car.
Global Cool’s website features blogs, discussion boards, video interviews with bands and an image gallery of festival goers who visited the bus and joined in the antics. There are also useful tips on saving energy and further campaigns to tackle climate change.
