iCymru is a new wireless internet space recently launched by Robert Geary. The IT visionary saw the potential of using the advanced PC-like capabilities of the Smartphone and WiFi access to obtain information on the move. People visiting The Hayes, in Cardiff City Centre, can now tap directly into an underground art and culture scene.
Currently, the under 25s only make up a small percentage of all those visiting museums and galleries. However, this new online venue can now bring art and cultural spaces directly to them ñ along with issues relating to teen pregnancy or bullying and what can be done about it.
iCymru is a great source of information regarding local events. People can check out bands or listen to their music, watch videos or look at artwork before parting with their cash. The space is also an ideal way for events around Cardiff to publicise themselves. Organisers can now upload e-flyers, instead of littering the streets with advertising material.
The project also provides a platform for artists, bands and young people to exhibit their work ñ a place they can relate to and become a part of. For example, one could stand in the exact spot that a poet first got their inspiration, while simultaneously listening to a recital of the poem on a mobile phone.
With this new wireless arena, we are all staring the future in the face. Through mobile phones, iCymru is an opportunity to bring information to the palm of our hand. Its potential is limitless.
