In order to live in a way that sustains us, without damaging the planet in the process, we need to make changes. There is a growing realisation that this is not something that will happen all at once.

A Transition Initiative’ is a community working together to address the following big question: ‘For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase our resilience to the consequences of Peak Oil and reduce carbon emissions?’

There are now approximately 240 official Transition Initiatives around the world with a vast and increasing number of mullers’ ñ communities considering becoming involved or starting to adopt the Transition approach.

In a short time, the word transition’ has become commonplace in many areas, even being used in government reports. ‘What we are seeing in the rapid and viral growth of the movement is extremely heartening,’ said Transition co-founder Rob Hopkins. ‘It’s endlessly fascinating to see what ordinary people do when they’re inspired by it and set about motivating those around them. For me, being alongside the work of individual initiatives, it’s refreshing to see how the idea is starting to take its place in local councils and a wide range of other organisations.’

Since we do not have a choice about the global challenges we face, essentially we are all in transition, it is just that not all of us know it yet!
