Green gas’ made out of food waste and sewage, is to be piped into British homes by sustainable energy pioneers, Ecotricity.

Biogas, as it is commonly referred to, is produced by a composting-likeprocess, known as anaerobic digestion. The procedure involvesbiodegradable material being broken down by micro-organisms in theabsense of oxygen. Ecotricity say, that with the right governmentbacking, ‘green gas’ has the potential to meet 50 per cent of the UK’sdomestic needs.

Ecotricity will supply gas directly to the grid using a mix of greenand conventional ‘brown’ sources. However, the proportion of green fuelwill increase as more customers sign up and ‘gas mills’ can bebuilt — the same model they use with electricity, where revenue is spenton new windmills. Since 1996, Ecotricity have been investing more percustomer on new green energy sources than all the UK electricitysuppliers put together.

We are the real British Gas now,” says company founder, Dale Vince. “We are kick-starting the market to move Britain from brown to greengas and turning people’s gas bills into green gas mills.”

Dale adds: “People can have complete control of where the money theyspend on their energy bills goes and ultimately, where their energywill come from. Nobody has to carry on giving their money to bigmultinational energy companies. Eco Dual Fuel has arrived!”

Half of Britain’s winter gas supplies already come from foreignsources, such as Russia. The country could be almost entirely dependentin the near future, as North Sea stocks run out. “By choosing greengas, customers can help unhook Britain from its addiction to foreigngas, make a positive long-term change to the world we live in. It willkeep thousands of tonnes of waste out of landfill, which could evenhelp keep council tax bills down,” says Dale.

Ecotricity pledges to deliver its green gas at no extra cost, matching British Gas on both its standard and dual-fuel price for each region. Ultimately, Dale plans to create bio-gas from other emerging next-generation technologies, such as special strains of algae — anaturally occurring, potentially endless source of energy.
