Whisper it gently, but things are definitely stirring at that august, old stalwart of the green movement ñ Bristol's Schumacher Lectures, now in their 25th year. For, while the greybeards are still strongly in evidence, this year saw a positive invasion of youth, both on the platform and on the floor

In some places, these groups are linking up, forming local networks for mutual support, co-operation, and sharing of resources.

It was a great day for the Schumacher lectures. The sun was shining and the atmosphere was buzzing as 600 people gathered and networked. It is not often that you get such a bunch of highly intelligent, strongly motivated people together and they were remarkably enthusiastic considering the gloom that was central to two of the speakers' messages.
