Paying close to $2000 a month to heat the 500 gallons of water that needed boiling daily to cook and clean within the restaurant Salvador looked for new ways to acquire electricity at a reduced price.

This summer, a prototype marine turbine, designed to produce electricity from tidal currents, will be installed off the coast of Lynmouth, in North Devon. 'It works on the same principle as a windmill but, because water is denser, the turbines don't have to go so fast,' explains Peter Fraenkel. technical director in charge of engin-eering of Marine Current Turbines.
